Richard J, born Richard Mark Jansen on August , 21, 1989 in a small island of South-East Asia, Singapore as the second youngest of eight siblings. Mixed Race, Mum Portugese & Dad Asian, Richard was surrounded by a family who loved music. His mum, a singer back in her days was his main influence.

Richard was interested in art and poetry from a young age. He was filled with passion for music and at the age of 12, started composing his own songs. Growing up, Richard always had a love for Hiphop/Pop music. Influenced by artists such as Bow Wow, Michael Jackson, J-Kwon, Lil Fizz, he then learned and created a style of his own. Rapping and flowing to uptempo beats was mainly the kind of songs he produced and preferred, mixing sounds of Hiphop and Pop to create a new flavour.

He began performing at the age of 15, joining Street Competitions/Battles. In 2005, he joined his first Rap Battle as a soloist. He won the contest, moving on to join another Rap Battle 2 months later. He won his second battle, with the prize opportunity to perform for the National Day Parade.
